Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) is a structured technique that allows a person to perceive distant people, objects, or locations—across both time and space—using the mind alone. It involves tuning in mentally to targets that are otherwise inaccessible by normal sensory means, whether they are miles away or rooted in the past or future.

Contrary to popular belief, CRV is not about psychic predictions or mystical visions. Instead, it’s a learnable skill grounded in a systematic process that allows the subconscious mind to connect with non-local information and bring it into conscious awareness.
Remote viewing is often used when traditional methods fall short. Law enforcement agencies, corporations, or individuals may request insights into past or future events, hidden objects, or sealed-off locations. For instance, viewers are asked to perceive everything from historical mysteries—like Amelia Earhart’s final flight—to the contents of a locked safe or the layout of a distant facility.
Remote viewers are tasked with accessing data that exists beyond conventional reach. This could be:
A location on the other side of the world
An event that occurred long ago
A hidden object
A glimpse into a possible future
These perceptions are often sketched, described in writing, or expressed verbally during the viewing session.
The objective of remote viewing is to gather impressions through the subconscious and bring them into conscious form. This data flows from non-physical senses—beyond the five physical ones—and is interpreted using language, sketches, or symbols.
Moreover, viewers remain “blind” to the target to avoid bias and maintain the purity of the information.
Not at all. Remote viewing is not the same as being psychic. While natural intuitives may take to the process quickly, CRV is a structured, teachable skill that anyone can learn with training, practice, and patience.
Remote viewers rely on more than just visual impressions. Taste, smell, sound, texture, temperature—even emotional resonance—can all emerge during a session. For example, a viewer might:
Smell saltwater
Feel cold stone beneath their feet
Sense a mood of celebration or danger
Hear birdsong or machinery
Additionally, these impressions are often subtle and symbolic, requiring careful attention and interpretation.
While it might sound similar to out-of-body experiences, CRV does not require leaving the body. It’s a mental, not metaphysical, process. As researcher Rosemary Ellen Guiley described, remote viewing is about “seeing with the inner eye,” but it’s fundamentally different from astral projection.
The late Ingo Swann, a renowned psychic, artist, and researcher, is credited with developing CRV in collaboration with physicists Russell Targ and Hal Puthoff at Stanford Research Institute during the 1970s.
Swann’s work laid the foundation for military remote viewing programs like the CIA-backed Star Gate Project. He described himself as a “consciousness researcher” who explored altered states and human potential.
A key challenge in remote viewing is limiting “mental noise”—the inner commentary, judgments, or logical guesses that distort raw impressions. This interference, known as analytical overlay (AOL), can lead a viewer astray.
Therefore, learning to quiet the mind and remain open to subtle input is crucial. Without mental clarity, true signals from the subconscious are easily lost in the noise.
CRV can be applied in many areas, such as:
Finding missing people or objects
Solving law enforcement cases
Exploring your own past or future
Locating resources like water or minerals
Describing inaccessible objects or sealed containers
Understanding historical events
Visiting past locations mentally
Clearly, its applications span both personal and professional realms.
Choose someone to guide your session. Their role is to select targets, maintain structure, and ensure focus.
Have your monitor pick five intriguing images (places, objects, events) and seal them in envelopes. Assign each a random number—your “coordinate.”
Take time to quiet your thoughts. Releasing distractions enhances your mental clarity.
Pick an envelope and write your name, date, time, and coordinate aloud and on paper. This locks in your intention.
Describe impressions—light/dark, hot/cold, sounds, smells, emotions. Don’t censor anything. Every sensation counts.
Draw whatever comes to mind. Crude shapes are fine. Often, they match target details later.
Mentally “zoom out” from the target. Change perspectives to gather additional details.
When impressions fade, say “End” aloud and note the time.
Briefly recap your session: physical, emotional, and environmental impressions.
Open the envelope. Compare your session to the actual image. Look for similarities.
Accuracy improves with consistency. Treat each session as personal insight—not just performance.
Remote viewing is more about self-awareness than proving accuracy. It’s a doorway into the hidden potential of your subconscious mind.
Let go of ego. Release the need to be “right.” Allow the experience to unfold naturally. Even the best viewers miss sometimes. What matters is curiosity, discipline, and practice.

Thanks for the good enlightening article. Keep up!
… you’re welcome Lawrence! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the article!
Hi Michelle,
Just learning to do this. I have a question: In #6 of how to do RV, you mentioned looking up or below your feet, and what you percieved. Are our eyes supposed to be open or closed? Because, all I see is what I normally see… the ceiling and the floor. Am I supposed to see something other than where I am?
In your mind’e eye visualize as you look and explore! (:
One more question Michelle,
My place where I live is never quiet. Should I go to a park or where headphones at home?
Can I listen to soft instrumental or new age music while doing these exercises?
Yes, it should be a quiet place Sean. Ideally this is in a sacred space in your home. If not, then where you can be uninterrupted and it’s quiet, w/o music. Good question! (:
It’s great to know that we can access our subconscious mind.
I used to think this is only done by people who are specially gifted.
I had the same question as Sean Kirby but you have covered that.
Thanks Michelle!
… you’re sure welcome Bongani. I’m delighted you’re following. Yes, anyone has the ability to tap into their subconscious mind. It merely takes learning and practice. Warmly, Michelle

Hi Akila, I recommend eyes open but if it truly feels better to close them, then do so. Warmly, Michelle
Hi,
I can connect with the emotions of a person at the time of a photograph taken, very easily. I was wondering if there was a simple yet effective technique to connect to the emotions of the person in the present moment,
rather than at time of photograph. Would it be a command or statement of sort to myself to be able to connect to the person in the present? I don’t have monitor to work with.
Thanks for a great website.
Hello there! You might find this article on telepathy helpful! Warmly Michelle
Hello,
I have a friend who’s husband is missing. They have 3 young children and there has been minimal help to find him. Is there a remote viewer I can contact to help her? Any help at all is appreciated for her and her family.
Thank you,
Alli
If you’d like to schedule a session, I’m happy to help you with that. I look forward to hearing from you, should you choose. Warmly, Michelle
